‘009 MEWA’ relief — an artistic installation by Adam Ankiewicz from the unique ‘Mewa’ tile collection in concrete ceramics.
My site-specific installation, created as a permanent piece. The design of the relief was part of the architectural documentation for a residential renovation, designed with Joanna Musiałowicz.

The background of the relief is made from Italian polymer glass in white and green. Openings were cut directly into panels bonded to an MPF board to fit both the concrete and wooden MEWA tiles. The wooden MEWA is made from MDF, finished with natural American walnut veneer. All the other tiles were made by hand using my own concrete ceramics technique. The binder used for each individual Mewa tile is white Portland cement, which is characterised by its high strength. Its very high degree of whiteness makes it possible to achieve any colour for the tiles. The pigments used to colour the composite mixture are the highest quality, finely ground oxides of iron, chromium, cobalt and titanium. They are characterised by high colour uniformity and are resistant to weathering and UV radiation.

An essential component of the composite mass in tile production is micro-aggregate, specially formulated by me from quartz sands with strictly defined physical and chemical parameters. Subjected to a special technological process, they allow for the regulation of the uniformity and porosity of the composite mass.

When creating the correct composite formula for each tile, fine-grained additives and the latest-generation admixtures are used; thanks to their microscopic structure, these enable the production of a highly durable material with increased resistance to fire, water, chemical agents and abrasion.

All stages of the technological process are designed and selected individually for each of my works.

Completed ‘009 MEWA’ installation by Adam Ankiewicz from the iconic “Mewa” collection, combining wood and concrete ceramics.

The cement mixture formula I developed made it possible, with the use of the appropriate chemicals, to precipitate the black pigment visible on the outer surface of the tiles. To this day, I consider this effect to be groundbreaking and significant for my further creative and technical development.
